BBW Meaning

Beauty lies in the eyes of its beholder!

Well, this adage seems to be a little controversial in current time, where beauty has been standardized with certain features, colors, and shapes.

The current scenario where beauty is evaluated on the basis of above mentioned standards, it is hard to find a perfect example. And often to attain such a standard, people are bound to go under the knife and achieve it.

However, this view fails to acknowledge the subjective nature of beauty and the fact that it can vary greatly from person to person.

It calls for a change!

A change which defines that beauty can never be standardized or confined to a narrow definition based on society expectations.

Well, to shatter the status quo with a booming outcome, a new concept is coming into the market which is creating a stir- BBW!

Curious to know what all it entails???

Hold on!

In this post we have brought you a closer look to understand it better. Let’s get started.

BBW- a new term gaining popularity

BBW is gaining immense popularity as it promotes body positivity and inclusivity at larger, while bashing down the stereotypical beauty standards.

Although, just like any new term being introspective from a 360 degree angel, this term has also not escaped from criticism. As some out there say, it only promotes an unhealthy lifestyle, and gives a wrong turn to the beauty standards.

Whereas some believe this concept has boosted body image positivity while shunning body shaming, that lead to unnecessary complex beauty treatments, and force to run away from natural beauty.

Despite having a strong debate around it, this concept at large accepts every size, shape and color while celebrating it with boosted value.

On the other hand, when you look closer and see- then this concept is rising high in the dating world also, where normalizing every beauty type is still a question.

Indeed, in recent years, our society has taken a positive turn towards body image, and has started to accept every body type. In such a changing environment, this concept is breathing a sigh of relief.

BBW- is way beyond its meaning

It stands for “big beautiful women,” but eventually it is larger than its offering. It is no more associated with curvy or overweight women.

But describes every woman out there who is confident, comfortable in their own skin, and proudly embraces their bodies.

Hence, it is more a celebration of womanhood, that comes in different shapes and size and of course colors.

How did it originate?

Well, this concept originated with the ’70s via Carole Shaw, where a BBW magazine started.

It stands for “Big Beautiful Women,” and was discussed to celebrate and embrace the beauty and diversity of plus-size women, which remained a question for the society to accept them with warmth.

With this magazine, the idea was to give a confident platform to such women, who are degraded upon, or looked upon due to their size and color, so no one can discriminate against them.

Since its inception, the term BBW has become widely recognized and accepted, and has brought a positive approach to body positivity.

How is it being used?

Honestly, this diminutive is easy to be witnessed across online platforms, where women are subjected to body shaming filth.

Indeed, this term has originated as a way to categorize body types, but since its inception it has evolved into a powerful movement which clearly states that self-acceptance of body image is no more a challenge.

Is BHM and BBW the same?

BHM, which stands for Big Handsome Man, is a term that holds various connotations and meanings, and is tad different to BBW.

BHM is an accepted term in the society and speaks of male beauty/ physique standards, that only boasts how well men are taken by the society. Whereas the BBW clearly depicts a concept that is derived to break the societal cage of the female body.

Undoubtedly, our existing societal system speaks of weak standards produced by mainstream media, where a specific body size with color is considered acceptable notion.

On the other hand, our society accpets the big handsome men as they are, as it speaks their strength and power.

Mainstream media tends to promote a standard of attractiveness that idealizes thinness, making it difficult for women who don’t fit this mold to feel confident in their own skin.

However, the term “BBW” has emerged as a way to challenge societal norms and embrace a different kind of beauty.

“BBW” stands for “big, beautiful woman” and it is used to celebrate women who have fuller figures and curves.

Is BBW a fad?

Social media can be taken into a positive approach or with an ill mindset.

It can be source of information, at the same time, it can also depict a set of unrealistic standards which are hard to be followed.

There are painful incidents sparked due to social media, where people have gone for cosmetic evolution of their bodies to fulfil those unrealistic goals.

However, there is another side of the story as well- where influencers on social media promote body positivity with real-time examples, enabling users to come out of the mirage created by unwanted beauty standards.

These influencers are shattering the walls of societal expectations and making challenges around weight and color as normal as possible.

Despite the potential backlash and criticism they may face, these BBW (Big Beautiful Women) continue to spread messages of self-acceptance and self-love, regardless of whether society approves of their weight.

If you’re a BBW, you’re probably tired of reading books where the female lead is several sizes smaller than you.

While there’s nothing wrong with that, there is a problem when BBW don’t have options other than this.

BBW deserve to see themselves as the confident and desirable protagonists in stories too.

BBW- a body shaming or body tolerance concept

This is a part of body shaming, a phenomenon that has become extremely common these days.

Well, body shaming is a serious concern that can lead to extreme harm to mental health with drastic consequences such as sabotaging one’s natural physical appearance, just to fit in the society.

Be it online or in person- such body shaming happens in various ways, like mocking, ridiculing, or judging someone for their weight, shape, size, that is largely outlined by media and celebrities who are nowhere close to the reality.

Unfortunately, body shaming leads to harmful consequences making individuals vulnerable enough to lose their self-esteem, lifelong body image issues, and broken mental health problems like anxiety and depression.

The toxic environment created by these factors leaves an indelible impact on people, where despite having skills and talent, they never face the world with the right attitude.

One should not forget that respectful and inclusive language is not just about showing decency towards others, but it also ensures that society tunes into an inclusive platform, where anyone can grow out of bounds.

Final Thoughts

Body shaming in today’s time is considered a NORMAL, which is not!

Calling people names on the basis of their color, size is a derogatory term.

Sadly, today our generation is driven by the social media which comes packed with rapid dissemination of images and videos showing unrealistic ideals of beauty and body perfection.

However, this is a false call!

No one in this world is made perfect, and we humans are always impatient looking for something extra to attain that so-called perfection.

But this is a wrong approach- which has imbibed within our lifestyle as an obsession carried out by the media.

This is the time to put a full stop to this harmful approach with concepts like BBW and five a boost to positive mental health.

Whether it be through social media, magazines, or even in our daily interactions, there seems to be a constant pressure to conform to certain beauty standards.

It is time we accept ourselves as is and not make fun of the size or shape of a person.
