We binge-watched episodes and films spanning a wide range of genres, from tense criminal dramas to raunchy adolescent comedies years after years.

Thankfully, the industry is making significant progress in terms of on-screen representation.

But, as the year draws to a close, we’re looking forward to another round of fantastic programming, as well as a new wave of entertainment trends.

You may still continue downloading films from the pirate bay, but after reading our top entertainment trends, you may want to shift your watchlist a little.

So, without further ado, let’s get started.

Top 7 Entertainment Trends Of 2022

The entertainment industry is one of the most versatile ones in the world, and you can’t keep on getting entertained if you don’t take part in this changing roller coaster.

Get ready for the most obvious entertainment trends of 2022 here:

1: Raunchy Comedies Are On The Rise

Adult-themed shows and films with R-rated humor are nothing new, but in 2021, the genre certainly got greater attention.

Full-frontal nudity, sexting, and drugs are included in Hulu’s Plan B, following a girl’s efforts to find a Plan B pill after her sexual encounter.

The film Bad Trip follows two best friends on a road trip, pranking on strangers, full of sexual innuendo and crude humor.

Sex Education, Netflix’s raunchy progressive series, delves into many serious subjects surrounding sex, from experimenting to sexual identity, but with a lighthearted spin.

2: Content Are Now Without Barriers

Even though international shows and films have been quietly gaining traction in the United States, they have largely stayed on the periphery of American entertainment.

From Netflix’s Spanish drama, Elite, to the engaging French thriller, Lupin—we saw an increasing demand for several binge-worthy foreign shows in 2021.

Money Heist, a Netflix Spanish criminal show, was also a worldwide hit.

There’s also Squid Game, a South Korean survival drama that made history as Netflix’s most-watched show debut ever.

3: Black Women Are Getting Pivotal Roles

Last year has seen many attractive Black women hit our screens, but more significantly, they have offered complex characters that reflect real-life women.

In HBO’s Insecure, Issa is awkward and untidy but also creative and ambitious.

Angie from Harlem is a stunning plus-size vocalist who is vivacious and hilarious. Bow from Black-ish is a well-educated mother who has perfected the art of juggling work and family life.

They’re self-assured, capable, resilient, and powerful. They’re also multifaceted, which is crucial. Hence, In 2022, we can hope for even more accurate portrayals of Black women.

4: Older Women Are Shining Golden

Let’s face it; there aren’t a lot of stories about older women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Thankfully, it appears that Hollywood is already attempting to fill that need.

On the Verge, a film by Julie Delpy follows four accomplished friends in their fifties who don’t have it all figured out.

Harlem, a new comedy from Prime Video, follows a group of Black 30-somethings as they strive to reconcile love and work.

If you are true lovers of Sex and the City, you will appreciate HBO’s recent release ‘And Just Like That,’ which follows Carrie Bradshaw and her friends as they attempt to negotiate life in their 50s.

5: Original Docuseries Are Gaining Popularity

Tiger King was not only a cultural phenomenon, but it also cleared the way for a slew of eye-opening films to follow.

HBO’s The Vow, which delves deeper into the NXIVM cult, and Netflix’s Night Slaker, where two detectives strive to catch a murderer, are two more standouts.

We should expect to see even more docuseries in the coming year since millions of people have become engrossed by these riveting genuine stories.

6: Podcasts Are Replacing Radio

A total of 155 million Americans listened to a podcast in 2019, up from 51% in 2019.

Since Radio listenership has been steadily falling since 2011, podcast seems to have taken their place.

There are over 2 million podcasts and 48 million episodes, so it may appear that new podcasts are being released every day.

There are, however, plenty of interested listeners.

By the end of 2022, the total number is expected to rise.

7: Behind The Camera Representation Is Getting Crucial Importance

Those who labor behind the scenes receive little attention, but it’s worth noting that diversity behind the camera is equally as vital as diversity in front of it.

According to Darnell Hunt, co-author of the UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report, fans prefer shows with diverse casts.

He clarified that they’d observed this need for a wide range of content throughout their research.

Last year’s series of successes with diverse writers’ rooms demonstrates that audiences are yearning for accurate portrayals.
