The first thing you should know when buying a pair of running shoes is what type of feet you have.
Our feet are normally classified into three categories: normal, low-arched or flat feet, and high-arched feet. People with normal arches are the most common.
They are neutral runners and will benefit from stability running shoes. If you have low arches or flat feet, you tend to overpronate or roll your feet inward too much when running. The best type of running shoes for you would be motion control running shoes.
If you happen to have high arches, you tend to hide or absorb much of the shock on the lateral aspect of your foot so you will need running shoes with a good cushion to absorb most of the heavy impact of running. It is easy to determine your foot type.
You can do this by wetting the bottom of your foot and stepping on a piece of paper. From this test, you can see whether you have normal-, low- or high arches. Many brands of running shoes like Nike, Adidas, Asics and New Balance have different lines that cater to all types of feet.
